Tuesday’s Trend Alert…

So one of South Africa’s, or should I say Africa’s biggest clouthing labels is back…

AMA KIP KIP
reloaded…

Now we all know they didn’t go anywhere, I mean, without them, who would have funded L-Tido’s music video’s…
You may have seen they recently moved their flagship store back into the Zone @ Rosebank (in its original home) and not only did they open a lil store, they opened a really nice looking lil store…

The store gave me hope that this great brand, will be coming back with a bang… And that they have…

Now we all remember the original Ama Kip Kip design, with the “Upside Down Pyramid” (#NoHetro). This design was seen in almost every music video in and out of South Africa… And without a doubt, became one of the biggest fashion trends South Africa has seen. Not only was it a fashion trend, but it became a whole lifestyle and movement. In America you would have souljah boys but here in Mzanzi we had the Ama Kip Kip generation… And even I was part of this generation…

Think I owned close to 20 different Ama Kip Kip T’s… In fact, I wore a fur jacket and an Ama Kip Kip T to the 2009 SAMA’s.. (Now thats swag…lol…) Other famous faces who would wear Ama Kip Kip included the face of the brand, Da LES, L-Tido and the Glitz Gang, Lulo Cafe and various other DJ’s, TV personalities and social butterfly’s. It became so trendy, I swear Jen Su would have rocked an Ama Kip Kip T just to remain relevant. But like all good things, there is always a dip… We saw it with Loxion Kulca and we saw it with Ama Kip Kip. They launched a range during the world cup called Ama Kip Kip Africa, and even though it didnt take off, they broke down barriers and did something very few people have done, and that was to create the idea of unifying Africa. Silly thinking South Africa is superior to the rest of Africa. They were one of the first people to say, “lets not think as South African’s, but rather as African’s”. And for this, I applaud them. Perhaps, they were not so active in Johannesburg, but honestly, who needs Joburg, when you have Africa… During this time, the store relocated to the mall in Rosebank and we all (myself included) thought this was the end for Ama Kip Kip. But what we did not know, was Ama Kip Kip launched their online store and were pushing out of Johannesburg more then ever. The famous T-Shirt has been seen in Nigerian, Kenyan and Ghanaian music video’s and become trendy in and out of Africa.

Now the store has relocated back to the Zone and is looking better then ever. Fancy lights, cool items on sale and state of the art features that make it one of Rosebank’s anchor stores. (this is a fact – according to Rosebank management, people go to Rosebank because of the Ama Kip Kip store – Halala!)

And 3 days ago, the new Ama Kip Kip range dropped in the new store…
You may have seen the new stuff on Instagram, if you follow Da Les, Like I do (even tho he doesnt follow back… #SideEye). But on Saturday, the new stock was released publicly and already sales have tripled …
Not only have they dropped new gear, but they have also dropped a few new logo’s.

And as you can see, they stuck to the African unity thing, even though the new logo has changed. I asked the main man, Nkosana why they decided to change the logo and he replied that a little reinvention is never a bad thing. Just because the look may have changed, it does not mean our movement has. We still aim to inspire the youth, not only in South Africa, but all over this beautiful continent.

However, even though the logo has changed, Nkosana has decided to go back to the original face of Ama Kip Kip, Da Les. Da Les of Jozi fame honestly made the brand an iconic label, using his super-stardom fame to help gain popularity for the urban clouthing label. He has been the most successful ‘face’ of the label and it was an obvious choice to get him to push the new gear.

But, now, not only is he the face of the label, but Da Les now owns shares in this clouthing label. (you heard it first on MikaStefano.com) Rapper, turned TV personality and now turned business man. Well done Les! It makes sense why he was Instagramming and flash mobbing the new logo and new gear. The guy has personal interests in the label…

I think some of the tracksuits and jackets are too sexy… I love the “6th Anniversary” on the jacket… The brand has grown and matured. It is now just as sexy, as it was when it first launched. The tracksuits are trendy and the jackets seem warm. (perfect for these winter days)… I am pretty confident in saying that the new look Ama Kip Kip will be like a phoenix and help re ignite this powerful local brand.
